Teaching Philosophy

There are 3 core tenets to Brayden's teaching philosophy:

1. Creativity before Technicality

It is important that student's immediately begin to experience the joy and art of music. Too many music students are bogged down in exercises and forget the importance of finding beauty and individuality in music.

2. Ear before Eye

A student's ear is their most important learning tool. Music is a language. As infants, before we learned to speak or to read, we learned to listen. From listening and repeating, we were able to develop our speaking and from speaking and sounding out words, we learned to read. This is the same progression we should learn any language, including music.

3. Depth before Breadth

A mistake to often made by teachers and students alike is to study too much material too fast. As Kenny Werner writes in his book, Effortless Mastery

“While moving quickly through material, you’re under the delusion that you are making progress. Spending enough time learning something would feel interminably slow, but that is the way of true growth. It takes what it takes. The fact is that if you don’t stay with the material long enough for it to become comfortable, you’ll find that it doesn’t stay with you.”
